Jamaica portraits, part 2

All rights © Lisa Kannakko

Back in June I took a short trip to Jamaica to shoot an assignment, and since I was there with some extra time, and my super sonic assistant Thomas, I decided to hire a local to take us inland to photograph people.  He drove us to the nearest town as requested, but once my camera was out all minds were closed.  Something about being a foreigner with a big camera that brought fear to the eyes, with the echoing words of NO.

Somehow I knew it would happen - it was after all a tourist environment.  I couldn't sit on the beach without someone selling me something. So I showed my test shot to my new friend, hoping that he would understand what I was seeking. That my idea was simple and pure, that I just needed faces.

So we drove until the sun set.  He took us up into the mountains, to his friends and family who perhaps thought it strange, but let me take their portrait.  We drove under clear skies through winding roads and jungle, to find people that would allow me a moment of time.  I shot quickly for fear they would refuse.
